Great Egret Ardea alba photographed in the
dawn in shallow water on Sanibel Island in Florida. These beautiful birds,
and other egret and heron species became the ultimate fashion
victims decades past. They were brought to the brink of extinction due
to demand for their feathers as decorations for women's hats.
This ecological calamity was brought to a halt through
a public outcry by conservationist and the birth of the National Audubon Society.
Limpkin Aramus guarauna in low light before dusk, foraging in water lettuce and rooted emergent vegetation for snails and crustceans. This relative of the crane family is truly one of the most evocative and haunting sounds of the swamps in the southeastern US, and throughout much of the tropical America.
Often quite shy or wary, this resident of National Audubon Society's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary seemed to relish in its safety, mere feet from passer byes on the raised boardwalk.
